Any political change does not occur in a vacuum. There is broader social, economic, cultural context that plays its role in effecting the change. I am not suggesting that political actors/factors do not have autonomy. What I am suggesting is that they are shaped by the above mentioned context.
In 1980’s political landscape started changing rapidly in India. Mandal, Kamandal, economic reforms were major factors that shaped politics. Unfortunately Congress had to face untimely deaths of Sanjay Gandhi, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. Though party had come to power in 1991, its internal structure remained unstable. It was reflected in electoral performance in various states as well as General election. During this time nobody from Gandhi family was involved in party affairs . These 6-7 years convinced the party that the factor which kept it stable was Gandhi family!
By the time Soniya Gandhi took the charge party had already weakened to great extent. Her leadership saved the party from internal chaos. she single- handedly pulled the party out of despair in 2004 . However congress led UPA government was coalition of number of parties. Congress had won 145 and 206 seats in 2004 and 2009 respectively . Clearly position of the party was not so strong in the coalition. In fact we saw how smaller alliance partners tried to hold the congress to ransom. (e.g nuclear agreement). Hence though the congress was in power its coalition compulsions affected its growth and expansion.
Then came the discovery of ‘notional losses’ of thousands of crores by Vinod Rai(then CAG) and allegations of corruption. Nothing concrete has come out of those allegations. But Congress was discredited by RSS ecosystem. Now in hindsight we know that those who orchestrated India Against Corruption Movement were either pawns in the hands of RSS or had their own political agenda.
Nevertheless it took heavy toll on the Congress….
And all the blame was shifted to RAHUL GANDHI!
Now we know what kind of vile propaganda of misinformation against Rahul Gandhi (& family) has been run by the RSS-BJP Ecosystem at industrial scale. In reality Rahul Gandhi is erudite, profound personality. His humility stands out among arrogant and narcissistic scoundrels. His message of love has not drowned in the flood of Hatred. His commitment to Justice and inclusive development has not been affected by pressure of populism. He has been betrayed by those who were benefited by the party for many years. But he has never played victim card or uttered a single word of condemnation for those who deserted the party when he needed them most.
He is the only politician, whose ideological credentials can never be doubted, who has stood his ground.
When you have immoral, unethical, evil political foe, things are not easy for sure.
Things may not look very bright right now, but they say ‘ a week is a long time in politics’! Façade which is based on lies, illusions does not have long life. Hence Modi politics has expiry date.
In such a situation Rahul Gandhi stands for values cherished by the freedom struggle. Silver lining is at this moment millions of youngsters, many of them voiceless, are fighting for the same values. And Rahul Gandhi knows this very well. His renewed efforts to connect with these youths and vulnerable masses are in right direction.
Reviving party is no doubt herculean task, But Rahul Gandhi can and will do it because political power is not only thing he is fighting for, his fight is for values Indian Civilisation and freedom struggle represents! And he is determined to continue the fight…
